Therapy in a Pediatrics Setting !

Hey everyone

As you might of glimpsed from previous posts one of my placements was in pediatrics. While on placement i saw a lot of technology being used to aid the development of the children and to help them achieve normal everyday things like talking  or being able to move independently.  So here are some videos that i found useful when on placement, around technology and also some that i found recently that i think are fantastic at explaining the use of technology within the OT field of pediatrics. Not all the videos feature OTs or are set in paedatric settings but they all have technologyand are using it to improve peoples lives.

Child using an ipod touch to communicate

This video is particularly interesting to me as it is showing technology that is commonplace now among New Zealand citizens and is transforming it for the use of people living with disabilities to allow them to communicate what they want and when they want it! I saw something similar while on placement with a young boy with cerebral palsy who was non verbal.  It was amazing to see his face when he could touch the ipad to say certain phrases.

Child using an easy stand to participate

Its not important to watch the whole of this video just the first minute or so. For children who require complete assistance, as does this little girl, it is easy to see how a device such as an easy stand can allow them some sort of independence in life.

My Button App

This App is a free download that can be used for children who struggle to communicate and who struggle with the  social skills needed to participate in activities.

Adaptive switches

This video is neat as it clearly looks at the need of a child to  play and you can see that the wee boy is really interested in what is going on. Play is such a large part of a childs life and is very important developmentally as it allows children to recognise cause and effect.  The video also looks at what the long term benefit of using th switch is going to be for the boy, such as improving motor co-ordination for his use of an alpha talker communication device.

Adaptive Technology

This video provides a good summary of the assistive technology devices used in therapy. It also provides an indepth look at what some children with disabilities lives are like.

So thats all for this post anyway. I hope it has been informative and that you have enjoyed your visit to my blog! =)

    1. Hey Amy

My first placement was in child development in a pediatrics setting. It was really interesting becaue i got to see so many different conditions and treatments in such a short persiod of time and all the clients we saw had different conditions. I can see how you would get confused though, my secound placememt was in a community mental health day programme.

      Have a great night
